September 27 – South Carolina House of Representatives District 100

September 27 – South Carolina House of Representatives District 100

Republican State Representative David Umphlett passed away earlier this year, triggering a special election in the 100th district which contains the towns of Moncks Corner, Whitesville, Cordesville, Pimlico and Macedonia.

This race will have little effect on the makeup of the House. Republicans have a commanding 75-48 advantage over Democrats.

The Republican candidate is Berkeley County Planning Commission Chairman Eddie Southard, who also owns a construction business.

Democrats nominated Tonia Aiken-Taylor, the first African American councilor in Moncks Corner, a fascinating small town originally settled by French Huguenots. She is also a minister at the local church.
