TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2011, SPECIAL ELECTION
FOR THE PURPOSE OF VOTING ON THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:
“Shall Virgie Thompson be recalled from the office of Council Member?” [ ] YES [ ] NO
STATEMENT AS PROVIDED IN THE APPLICATION FOR THE RECALL PETITION
Councilmember Thompson while serving as mayor has committed misconduct in office by Offering a False Instrument For Recording in the First
Degree in violation of AS 11.46.550 and Theft By Failure to Make Required Disposition of Funds Received or Held in violation of AS 11.46.210. Mayor Thompson accepted payment of $1500 monthly compensation for November 2010 but failed to be present and working for the city for 100 hours as required by HMC 2.04.050.
She also did knowingly submit false information on her work accounting report in that she did not work the number of “routine” hours
claimed for the month of November 2010 because she was not present in the State of Alaska from November 20-27, 2010.
Having served on the City Council for over 2 years, and having taken part in the debate to increase the mayor’s compensation,
Councilmember Thompson is fully aware of but chose to ignore the requirements for the mayor to receive legal compensation. By submitting false work accounting information and by accepting compensation she was not entitled to, Virgie Thompson committed misconduct in office and should be recalled from the Houston City Council.
STATEMENT AS PROVIDED IN REBUTTAL BY COUNCILMEMBER VIRGIE THOMPSON
I have consistently spent more than the required 100 hours each month performing my mayoral duties to the fullest. It is difficult to
document hours worked after the fact, especially when demands are made to supply details for dates 3 months in the past. I attempted to comply and inadvertently listed some hours over Thanksgiving when I was out of town, though I was in constant contact via telephone on days the city was open.
I am proud to be your mayor and have worked diligently for the community. We continue to improve the tarnished image of our City and put
our financial affairs in order. The financial problems this fiscal year originated when $100,000 was removed from the general fund by the previous administration in October to cover overspending. My administration continues to work hard to uncover the overspending, corruption, and bring financial stability and accountability to the city. We are restoring our ability to work with our neighbors in local government and emergency services. We have overcome many obstacles in a short time.
Please support my mission to restore honesty, integrity, and dignity to our City and vote NO on July 26.
Thank you for your support.
