May 4 – Denver City Council District 1
Councilman Rich Garcia has been named the Regional Director for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and this means there will be a special election for his City Council seat. This special election will be conducted via the mail.
District 1 includes Denver’s Highlands Neighborhoods and includes all of the Regis, Sloan’s Lake & Berkeley, as well as portions of Chaffee Park, Sunnyside, Jefferson Park , West Colfax & Sun Valley.
Ten candidates have qualified for this race – the winner of the race will serve the remaining year of the term before a general election in May 2011.
The ten candidates are:
Georgia Sigala – a non-profit coordinator who has worked for youth-development and education organizations in the city
Paula Sandoval – A Democratic State Senator who represents district 34 and owner of a pair of Mexican restaurants in the city. She has been endorsed by the outgoing incumbent.
Susan Shepherd – a labor activist and an urban farmer who started a business growing and selling organic vegetables in Denver
Jerry Frangas – A Democratic State Representative who currently serves the 4th district and a licensed social worker
Chris Jeffrey – Owner of a human resource consulting firm who has served in the US Army Reserves
John Haney – A Denver police detective, army veteran and coffee-shop owner
Larry Ambrose – A neighborhood activist and local businessman
Jon Lehmann – An environmental lawyer and son of current Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann,
Ken Padilla – A civil rights attorney
Randle Swan – Treasurer of a business development district in the city and a historical preservationist
