March 23 – Florida House of Representatives District 4

March 23 – Florida’s House of Representatives District 4

As allegations swirled that Florida Republican Representative Ray Sansom directed millions of dollars to a university he then received a job from, the legislator decided to resign rather than to allow an ethics investigation to move forward. This leads to yet another special election in Florida, this time in the Panhandle of Florida. 5 Republicans will square off in a primary on March 23 and the winner will take on Democrat Jan Fernald, a US Air Force veteran and defense industry employee, in the general on April 13.

The five Republicans are quite impressive in their diverse background. They include Craig Barker, the Mayor of Destin who caused quite a stir by unequivocally coming out against offshore drilling along Florida, Matt Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach attorney who was endorsed by former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Bill Garvie, a Fort Walton Beach City Council member up until resigning for this election, Jerry Melvin, a former State Representative, and Kabe Woods, a business executive and property management business owner.
