In a stunning development, one of the leading contenders to replace Mayor Ray Nagin in New Orleans has dropped out of the race. State Senator Ed Murray, seen by most as the biggest competitor to fellow political heavy-weight Mitch Landrieu, has ended his campaign. He cited both the cost of the race, noting that he would have to go into “substantial personal financial debt” as well as wanting to avoid a racially divisive campaign. Murray is African-American while Landrieu is white.

New Orleans doesn’t have to worry about having too few choices however. This leaves 9 candidates. To learn all about them, click here
